Genesis of Somsar

Genesis of Somsar

The Ashram
The lingam of 'buro shiva'

In 1989, a few devotees initiated by Swami Bhuteshananda began visiting Somsar, the birthplace of theit "guru". The conditions prevailing during that time were appalling with only a muddy road leading to the village. Activities began with rebuilding the dilapidated temple of "buro shiva" the family deity of Swami Bhuteshananda. Other activities for the development of village Somsar following the ideals of service of Ramakrishna- Vivekananda was begun. Members of the Roy families belonging to the pre-sannyasa household clan of the revered Swami Bhuteshanandaji Maharaj came forward with their unstinted support and gifted their land for a temple and ashrama. Devotees started pouring in at the village. There was no proper commutable road, no temple where to worship. Even there was no place to sit for a while, whereas streams of devotees from Kolkata often kept on reaching the village on road in their cars. Observing the desperate situation the need of raising a temple was soon felt. On the auspicious day of 'Snanyatra' in 1998, foundation stone of the temple was laid and on December 4th of the same year, the temple was inaugurated.

The village where it all began

In due time all the functions of centenary celebrations were performed with deep reverence and joy. It was indeed an incomparable event in the entire Ramakrishna-Vivekananda movement. Assemblage of so many monks, nuns and devotees - everything set a new example. All these things were possible to be successfully performed because of the loving attraction of Swami Bhuteshananadaji Maharaj. Somsar village became richer with the inauguration by the respected Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj - new pathway with an Arch of welcome, new School building and Guest House. Two unique and authoritative books were published - 'Swami Bhuteshananada - A Pictorial Biography' and 'Swami Bhuteshananda Satabarshiki Sraddhanjali'.
